Ultimate Guide to Rishikesh- Yoga Capital of World

Seeking for an tranquil enlightenment or an adventure thrill, Rishikesh is the place. It has something or the other for everyone – for those looking for a month-long yoga vacation, to a time bound, less fortunate budget backpackers or an adventure rush weekends. During my recent visit to Rishikesh, I felt the compelling need to write about the city.

Sited in the Himalayan foothills beside the river ganga of northern India, is a city known as the ‘Yoga Capital of the World’ or “Adventure Capital of India”. Also famous by the international band “The Beatles” back in the 60s & 70s. On my way to Kedar-Badri trek i stayed here and had some surreal experience that i could never forget.

How to Reach

By Road:

Rishikesh is around 250km from the National Capital of India and just an hour away from Haridwar and is well connected with major cities by road. There are many buses easily available from New Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate at regular intervals.

By Rail:

Rishikesh has its own terminal but isn’t connected to major Indian cities so, the closest major Jn. is in Haridwar, which is well-connected with major cities. Approx 20 km away from Haridwar railway station which takes less than 40 minutes easily by bus or car. It will cost approx ₹25/- each for Buses, Rs 35/- per person for autos whereas there are several trains from Haridwar junction to Rishikesh.

By Air:

Situated at a distance of 21kms Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport to Rishikesh. There are shuttle bus & taxis easily available for the town.

Where to stay

Rishikesh can be called as hippie’s heaven, weather you are Lone backpacker, Or came with friends and families Rishikesh offers with a tons of hostels, hotels and ashrams at reasonably price. You can find Hostel dorms at ₹200 per night to luxury hotels with ₹5000 per night.

When to visit

Peak time to travel is between Mar–Jun, during the mild spring and warm early summer, when trekking, paragliding, mountain-biking and camping are popular activities whereas Sep–Nov are for white-water rafting.
From all over the world participants take parts in yoga-classes and other related events at International Yoga Festival which happens in the month of April each year.

Places to visit

You need 2-3 days to visit rishikesh, Keep Day 1 for local sightseeing and Day 2 for adventures activities.

1. Laxman Jhula

Tickets: No entry fee.
Opening Timings: Open at all times.
Duration: No specific duration.

Built in 1939,450 feet long and 70 feet from the river is an iron suspended bridges from where you can Witness the mesmerizing scenic waves of Ganges and temples.

2. Trayambakeshwar temple

Tickets: No entry fee.
Opening Timings: 6:00 am to 7:00 pm
Duration: 1.5 hrs

Just 150 meter distance from Laxman Jhula is the 13 storied trayambakeshwar temple dedicated to lord shiva. Inside the temple the walls and idols has a very intrucate designs & architecture brilliance. Feel The Enchanting Vibes with aarti.

3. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Tickets: No entry fee.
Opening Timings: 6am to 7pm .
Duration: 1.5 hours.

Located at a height of 1675 meters and 12 km from the city on a hill above Swarg Ashram the Neelkantha Mahadev Temple is one of the most important shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in India.

4. Swarg Ashram

Tickets: ₹600
Opening Timings: 06:00 AM to 08:00 PM
Duration: Typically up to 2.5 hours

On the bank of the river Ganges, is located one of the oldest Yoga ashrams in India. Built in the memory of Saint Swami Vishudhanand is a perfect place for people that seek solitude in this Celestial Cityyou can sit and meditate for hours or just sit watching the sun rise from the Shivaliks and sparkling waters of Ganga.

5. The Beatles Ashram

Tickets: ₹150(Indians) and ₹600(foreigners) for 3 hours. Vehicle charge of ₹250(Indians) and ₹500(foreigners).
Opening Timings: Open all days from morning till sunset.
Duration: 1.5 hours.

3km from laxman jhula is the famous ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Take a look at the eye-catching graffities and the paintings done by the visitors on the walls of the abandoned ashram.The calmness and tranquility of this place will leave you spell-bound. Recent years This ashram Rajaji National Park has aquired this ashram.

6. Triveni Ghat:

Tickets: free
Opening Timings: opens 24 hrs
Duration: aarti timing when crowd arrives 5.45am to 6.30am to 06:00pm to 07:00pm

It is place where river Yamuna, Ganga & Saraswati confluence, As Per the Hindu Mythology, that Those who Bath in Ganga will wash all his Sin, so pilgrims visitfrom all roung the country to take a holy dip in this place to purify their soul and wash away their sins.

Since the evening Aarti could be a delight for anyone’s eyes and heart, this place is over packed with crowd. Dont forget you camera for some stunning low light shots.
